“Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the sixteenth century
forward, blood flowed in battles of racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its Indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to
reject or feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it.”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Many tribal members use to legally change their name.

The Process

We will also pray first and the name giver will speak with you first and explain everything to you.

The Name giver will ask if there is anyone who seeks a name.

Those seeking a name will answer " My name is "     " And I seek a name.

The name giver will then pray to the Creator and smudge the person seeking a name and him or herself.

The Name giver may pray again and wait until he or she hears from the Creator.

Be careful not to rush the name giver. And be patient.

One the name giver receives a name for you. He will speak it out. And ask you if you receive the name.

You are to reply yes or now. If you do not accept the name the name giver may have you wait another time to get a new name. If you accept he or she will ask you say to you tell everyone your new name.

You will speak it out laud. And everyone will say "AHO" or "AMEN"]

The name given is your new name.
